Monique Caruth, DPT

Monique is running for Secretary in the 2020 Board Elections.

As the oldest of 3 daughters of Janice Caruth and the late Garth Caruth, Monique has been determined to become a great physiotherapist since the age of 12. A natural born leader, she’s captained her elementary and high school sporting teams, led debate teams, made national dean’s lists and honor society’s. Focused, determined, always looking ahead and working to put the pieces of the big picture together, she left her family behind in 1999 to pursue her PT degree thousands of miles away. It was a risk that she knew would pay off. At Howard University and living in Washington DC the huge gap in healthcare disparities, housing inequity, lack of representation became ever so more apparent to Monique. As one who believes in fairness and equality, Monique has never been shy of speaking for and championing causes to promote diversity, equity and inclusion. With a passion to improve quality of care and access, she started her own company to provide rehabilitation, nursing and social work services to adults in their homes or places they call home.

Candidate Statement
I became a home health therapist at an early stage in my career after leaving outpatient rehab for good in 2012 because I believe it’s one stage that I would have to make the greatest impact. I joined the HHS and felt welcomed and useful because of engaging leaders who were encouraging youthful voices to grow membership and make the section viable for years to come. As a candidate I will bring my “youth”, my diverse background being an immigrant, a black and also gay woman, my outspokenness, my passion and life’s goal of improving access to quality services and programs not only for patients but for therapists and students. I’d like to use this platform to help increase membership, become a more visible chapter and for members and non members alike to feel like they are welcomed and the section is with them and advocating for them.
