Charles Salvo, PT, DPT, Ph.D., MS, GCS

Dr. Salvo is running for the Nominating Committee in the 2024 Elections. 

Charles J. Salvo, PT, DPT, Ph.D., MS, GCS is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy (PT) at Lebanon Valley College. Dr. Salvo attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as an undergraduate and graduate student studying Chemistry. As an undergraduate student, he spent two summers in South Korea at Pohang University of Science and Technology studying Biochemical Engineering. In collaboration with Korean graduate students, his work aided in the publication of a peer reviewed article within the Journal of Separation Science in 2010. Also, in 2010, he received a BS and MS degree of Science within the field of Chemistry.

Following the completion of these degrees, he attended the University of Scranton to study Physical Therapy. As a student, he was a Graduate Assistant and shared a heightened level of interest in Physical Therapy research with the faculty. This interest led to the completion and publication of a research study in Physiotherapy Theory and Practice in 2015. He earned his DPT from the University of Scranton in 2014.

After graduation, Dr. Salvo began practicing as a Physical Therapist within the home health care setting. While practicing in home health care, he held numerous positions including Staff Physical Therapist, Director of Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapy, Clinical Manager, Field Preceptor, Clinical Instructor, and QAPI Team Leader. During this time, he also received the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) certification as a Geriatric Clinical Specialist in 2018. In addition to performing his full-time duties in home care, Dr. Salvo further progressed his formalized education and graduated from Marywood University with a Ph.D. in Strategic Leadership and Administrative Studies, earning the William G. McGowan medal for excellence in doctoral studies and a publication in the peer-reviewed Journal of Applied Professional Studies.It was during this time that he also was teaching Introduction to Biology and Anatomy and Physiology as an Adjunct Instructor in the Biology Department at Luzerne County Community College and a Lab Assistant in the Orthopedics Lab in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Scranton.

Following graduation, Dr. Salvo transitioned into the role of full-time faculty at Lebanon Valley College as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy. Dr. Salvo currently teaches the professional development course series including an administration and management course for graduate student physical therapists. Additionally, Dr. Salvo teaches graduate student physical therapists evidence-based critical inquiry and critical inquiry capstone.

Dr. Salvo is an active American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) member, APTA Home Health Section Publications Committee member, faculty advisor, and research advisor. His research agenda includes stress and stress management among health care workers and pelvic floor dysfunction. Most recently Dr. Salvo published a manuscript in the International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy.

Candidate Statement

This letter is to inform you of my strong interest and application for Nominating Committee Member within the Home Health Academy of the APTA. With a deep passion for leadership, education, a commitment to advancing the field of physical therapy, and a proven track record in academia and clinical practice, I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to the esteemed Home Health Academy.

Over the past 10 years, I have dedicated myself to both the academic and clinical aspects of physical therapy. As a licensed physical therapist, I have honed my clinical skills in a variety of settings including home health care, inpatient rehabilitation, and orthopedic practice. My hands-on experience has also allowed me to stay current with best practices and cultivate a deep understanding of patient care.

My academic journey has been equally robust. Moreover, I am deeply committed to service within the PT professional and academic community. I have been, and continue to be, an active member of the APTA, Home Health Academy of the APTA, and Geriatric Section of the APTA. I also serve on the APTA Home Health Section Publications Committee and Lebanon Valley College Admissions, Student Affairs, and Assessment Committees. In addition to my clinical and research experiences, I have also developed my interpersonal, time management, communication, and multitasking skills.

I am eager to contribute to the innovative and dynamic atmosphere of the Home Health Academy.
