Matt Janes, PT, DPT, MHS, OCS, CSCS

Dr. Janes is running for Vice President in the 2022 Elections.

In a short biographical statement about myself, I have been married for 22 years to Deb, also a physical therapist with over 30 years of practice and professional experience.  We have 3 amazing children, 2 boys and 1 girl, aged 19, 16, and 14 years. Each day is a new adventure and we look forward to seeing what lies ahead for each of them. We live in Kentucky and I have been here all of my life.

Outside of physical therapy, I have many interests and hobbies including music which was my first career path prior to PT where I had a piano major and voice minor. Over the years, I have continuously sought out educational opportunities throughout life as I feel we all have something to learn and can never know everything. Having a more comprehensive understanding of life's diversity and knowledge is an important element that I feel is beneficial for everyone. Besides formal education, degrees, and certifications, some diversity in knowledge, for me personally has been achieved through my service in Scouting. Our oldest son achieved the rank of Eagle a few years ago and our youngest is one step away. I have served as committee chair for our unit for several years and in doing so have learned and appreciated many life skills relevant to everyday living. Being prepared is not just the Scout Motto, but a good reminder for life.

I do believe we all have a higher purpose and part of living is demonstrating what impact you can have and can leave behind.  In a sense, my goal is to have a positive and meaningful impact and leave it, whatever it is, better than I found it.

Candidate Statement

As a physical therapist with over 25 years of practice and continuous membership in the APTA as well as nearly 20 years within APTA Home Health, I feel my professional dedication and experience are a valued asset to APTA Home Health. My volunteer professional service and direct experience with APTA Home Health have been in multiple capacities such as serving previously as Secretary for 2 terms, Research Chair for 2 terms, Publications committee member, and participant in the APTA PAC workgroup.  I continue to advocate for the practice of physical therapy in the home with our legislators at the state and federal levels and continuously look for opportunities to demonstrate the inherent value of physical therapy for our aging population.  We have much work to do as we face ongoing reductions in payment for our skilled services.  My desire to continue to voluntarily serve the professional association and Academy is directly related to the belief that we can all make a difference if given the opportunity, time, and forum to do so. I am willing to continue this pursuit as I feel my leadership and experience will be a valuable contribution to APTA Home Health, Academy Members, and the overall practice of physical therapy within the home.

Thank you in advance for your consideration in casting your vote for my candidacy in serving as your next Vice-President of APTA Home Health.
